What makes a world map personal, you wonder? Well, as with any other piece of wall art, it’s down to the amount of effort you put into it. If you’re inclined, a world map on your wall can be personalised as thoroughly and brilliant, as a new scrapbook or notebook you purchase at the start of the year. If you don’t believe us, just read on. You can use any or all of these tips below to make a world map truly special!
Stick in some colourful push pins
Whether you’re planning future visits to locations, or reminiscing places you’ve already been to, push pins are a lovely little addition to any map. Keep track of your travel bucket list or remind yourself and others of the best places. You could use specific colours as a code for yourself. For instance, use red push pins to mark places you want to go, blue ones can be places you’ve already been, green ones can denote whether or not it’s a solo trip or in a group, and so on and so forth.
Add some memorable photographs
What makes travelling really memorable is not just the destinations you will go, but some of the best people you will meet along the way, or those you’ll take with you. We live in a fast-paced world, constantly on the go and it gets easy to take that for granted. When you’re next on holiday, stow away your phone, get an actual camera out and get some prints of some people to add to your map. Even if were alone, you probably ran into a friendly cab driver, or a hotel receptionist that made sure you had a comfortable stay. A bartender that give you a sample of a beer you’d never tried before. A fantastic holiday is made by fantastic people!
Personalise a title at the bottom
Many people feel a caption on a map only applies when you’re buying a map gift. You can really go wild with the message, though. Remember, this is going to be hung (ideally!) in a room where you spend a lot of time. If you’re going to spend some time looking at it, or if its in a so-called focal point, where others are likely to spot it, you want something memorable that fits the occasion. Of course, it doesn’t have to be a famous or lofty quote at all. Maybe it’s that weirdly pronounced (yet hilarious!) word your best mate invented while inebriated, on the last holiday you took together!
Write directly on the map
Nothing says personal than a message you can write yourself. When our maps are laminated, they have a write on and wipe off effect. What this means is that you can use a dry wipe marker marker to write on the map and use any proprietary cleaner to wipe it off. Keep note of upcoming dates for your next holiday, or write something special on the map. If it’s a gift, you could write an inside joke to the person, that they’ll receive when they unroll the map. Mark off cities, towns and countries on your bucket list, and wipe them off as you visit them!
