Public Transport Directions on Google Maps (London only)

by Ronnie Hazley

Public Transport Directions on Google Maps

Public Transport Directions on Google Maps

Google maps have just added public transport directions to their service on desktop and mobile devices.

Public transport directions for London Underground, buses, trams and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) are all covered by the new feature.

While on any Google Maps page, click the ‘Get directions’ tab, then enter your location and destination points, and then click on the ‘By public transport’ button. The map will then calculate the best way to get there by Tube and / or bus, and suggest three optional routes.

You can also access the feature on your mobile —Android, iOS and BlackBerry mobile platforms are all supported. Google maps will use your GPS location when calculating the best route. There is also a Transit Navigation beta feature which will alert you when it’s time to change bus or train or when you have arrived at your destination.

Google has credited Transport for London (TfL) for making this feature possible as they made the information available through the London Datastore.

Tell us what you think about Google’s public transport feature?

Roadmaps are the winners over satnav- especially if you’re young

by Lizzy Galloway

Far more reliable road map

Far more reliable road map

Research has recently suggested that the traditional road map proves far more reliable than the satnav. The younger generation have become reliant on this technological gadget to navigate to their destination and are least likely to carry an atlas, whereas older motorists are more inclined to rely on maps to plan their routes.

However, research by the AA found that only 46% of older drivers have been lost in the past year, compared to 82% of drivers aged 18 to 24.

Research carried out in April 2011 by Dr Rosamund Langston, a scientist from the University of Dundee has revealed that drivers are losing their natural sense of direction because they are too reliant on satnav systems. She claims that drivers who keep one eye on the satnav screen rather than looking for familiar signs and reminders are losing their innate ‘caveman’ ability to work out where they are.

The satnav has been described as the Casanova of devices - flashy and good for some things, but not to be relied upon.

What do you use to navigate when driving- road maps or satnav?

The Dr Who tube map

by Ronnie Hazley

Dr Who tube map

Dr Who tube map

We have discussed alterative tube maps before in recent posts, but the latest creation by Crispain Jago has got to be the most creative. Dr Who fans will marvel at Jago’s interactive version of the tube map. Click on the image above for the full Dr Who tube map image.

The map illustrates all your favourite Dr Who at every generation. Each line represents one incarnation of Dr Who. For example, Tom Baker’s time as the doctor is mapped out in Bakerloo brown.

Each station corresponds to a villain encountered by the Doctor.

Each Doctor’s companions are also listed chronologically, and footnote symbols represent assistance from characters such as U.N.I.T. and River Song. Finally, every entry on the map is clickable, leading off to a wiki page about the badie.

Most under 25s can’t read maps -FACT

by Ronnie Hazley

Is it the right way up?

Is it the right way up?

More than half of under 25s would literally be lost if you asked them to read a map, research has claimed.

The fear of eroding our brain cells by relying too much on technology has always been present. Most of us use social network sites to interact with friends, or use online methods for entertainment such as music or gaming. So it comes as no surprise to learn that two-thirds of young adults are unable to read maps due to a reliance on sat-navs.

The MyVoucherCodes.co.uk poll of 1,976 drivers in the age group found that map-reading was alien to 67% of respondents - with sat-nav devices cited for the trend.

In fact, the research claims that young drivers had become completely dependent on their sat-nav systems for getting from A to B - with 83% saying they had one of the devices in their car.

The research suggests a worrying situation for younger drivers when there sat navs fail.

MyVoucherCodes chairman, Mark Pearson, confessed the findings were quite a revelation. “It’s actually quite surprising to find two-thirds of under-25s can’t read a map,” he said. “Whilst sat-nav does take away a lot of the stress associated with trying to find your destination, it doesn’t always take you to the right place. Map reading can be an invaluable skill to have; you never know when you might need it!”

The advent of satellite navigation has certainly added a new dimension to travel, but there is nothing like a good paper map for getting a real feel of where you are and how to get to your destination.
Maps never run out of battery or lose GPS signal at those vital moments.

Will you continue to use sat-navs for their convenience? Or do you believe the map reading skills are just as important?

Want to know more about the efforts being made to end Malaria all over the world? Then check out this great new infographic release by the Gates Foundation.

The Nothing But Nets organisation and the UN Foundation continue to raise awareness about Malaria and are working towards ending malaria deaths by 2015.

Check out the map, the facts and figures, and learn about the work that still needs to be done to end malaria deaths by 2015.

Meril Cullinan of Nothing But Nets has says that more needs to be done to achieve the 2015 target date.

“There’s a lot of useful information in there, and the bottom line is this: We’re making progress in preventing and treating malaria, but together, we can do more”.

Cullinan continues, “More” means different things to each of us – for governments and world leaders, it means making more smart investments to prevent and treat malaria. For scientists, it means more funding and hours in the lab to find a vaccine to prevent malaria. And for people like you and me, “more” means sending more nets to save more lives and spreading the buzz to get our friends and community to join the movement to end malaria.

New UK Land Cover Map shows how green we are

by Ronnie Hazley

UK Land Cover Map (LCM)

UK Land Cover Map (LCM)

Scientists have released a digital map showing never seen before details of the vegetation and land-cover types that makes up the British landscape.

By looking at the map we can better understand how the land is being used and how we can manage it more sustainably in the future.

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology on behalf of the Countryside Survey partnership produced the UK Land Cover Map (LCM) and is based on 70 satellite images collected between 2005 and 2008. The new map takes every piece of land in the UK, down to a resolution of 25m, and identifies the habitat there.

Proving our farming history, “improved grassland’ and “arable and horticulture” make up 25% of the UK. While we often hear so much about over population and urbanisation in the UK, it is reassuring to see that our land is still predominantly green.

Click on the map above to expand to a much larger image. Explore the map and let us know what you think.
