Political Storm likely after Changes to Constituency Boundary Map

by Ronnie Hazley

UK Parliamentary Constituency Boundary Wall Map

UK Parliamentary Constituency Boundary Wall Map

The Boundary Commission yesterday published proposals to cut the number of English constituencies from 533 to 502. Forecasters say Labour and the Lib Dems are set to make heavy losses due to the cuts.

The changes to constituency boundaries will also see the number of MPs cut from 650 to 600.

Labour is likely to suffer the biggest losses after changes to the political map, but proportionately the Liberal Democrats look set to be hit hardest.

Nick Clegg, Vince Cable, Chris Huhne and Tim Farron are among senior Liberal Democrats who will see their seats dramatically change for the worse. The Twickenham constituency held by Mr Cable, the Business Secretary, since 1997, will be split, pathing the way for a showdown with Tory Zac Goldsmith.

The Mirror says the Lib Dems face an election wipeout under boundary changes announced today.

Leader Ed Miliband said: “We have serious concerns about the Government’s decision. It’s gerrymandering.” David Cameron’s Witney seat in Oxfordshire is unchanged.

Premier League referees map revealed

by Ronnie Hazley

Premier League Referees Map

Premier League Referees Map

Combining two of my great passions- maps and football, Arsenal football blogger Arseblog have released a map of where Premier League referees are based from.

On first glance you may be surprised to see no London or South East located referees. The map shows that most of the referees are from the North West and Midlands.

Does this map identify any possible concerns that referees may be biased towards Premiership clubs that are located near them- including current champions Manchester United?

Perhaps the map shows that for logistical reasons referees are based in the midlands, making it easier to travel to games up and down the country.

Tell us what you think of the map.

Oldest map of Britain is now Interactive: Gough Map

by Ronnie Hazley

Gough Map- The oldest map of Britain

Gough Map- The oldest map of Britain

The oldest surviving map of British has been digitally released into a Google style interactive map.

The map dating from the 14th century is one of the country’s most historical documents and formed the basis for nearly all the maps that followed.

As part of a 15-month project, researchers at Oxford University have fully investigated the map and these findings can now be viewed as part of the online version.

Nick Millea, map librarian at the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, described how a team of investigators discovered the secrets to the Gough map, which he described as “a national treasure.”

Talking to the BBC Millea added: “It’s a very unique piece of cartography and there’s nothing else in the world like it - a map of that level of detail from that period of time.”

The map’s origins have been pinpointed to 1375, instead of 1360 as previously thought, by investigating differences in English handwriting over the period. They also confirmed that it was revised in the early 15th Century.

The map was bought by Richard Gough 1774 for two shillings and six pence and donated by him to the Bodleian Library in Oxford in 1809.

The online version boasts some Google-esque type features, including the ability to browse by place name - both current and medieval and also by geographical features.

Highlight the location and a fact box can be seen revealing geographical appearance, etymology, appearance on earlier maps - and even a cross reference to the real Google maps.

Public Transport Directions on Google Maps (London only)

by Ronnie Hazley

Public Transport Directions on Google Maps

Public Transport Directions on Google Maps

Google maps have just added public transport directions to their service on desktop and mobile devices.

Public transport directions for London Underground, buses, trams and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) are all covered by the new feature.

While on any Google Maps page, click the ‘Get directions’ tab, then enter your location and destination points, and then click on the ‘By public transport’ button. The map will then calculate the best way to get there by Tube and / or bus, and suggest three optional routes.

You can also access the feature on your mobile —Android, iOS and BlackBerry mobile platforms are all supported. Google maps will use your GPS location when calculating the best route. There is also a Transit Navigation beta feature which will alert you when it’s time to change bus or train or when you have arrived at your destination.

Google has credited Transport for London (TfL) for making this feature possible as they made the information available through the London Datastore.

Tell us what you think about Google’s public transport feature?

Roadmaps are the winners over satnav- especially if you’re young

by Lizzy Galloway

Far more reliable road map

Far more reliable road map

Research has recently suggested that the traditional road map proves far more reliable than the satnav. The younger generation have become reliant on this technological gadget to navigate to their destination and are least likely to carry an atlas, whereas older motorists are more inclined to rely on maps to plan their routes.

However, research by the AA found that only 46% of older drivers have been lost in the past year, compared to 82% of drivers aged 18 to 24.

Research carried out in April 2011 by Dr Rosamund Langston, a scientist from the University of Dundee has revealed that drivers are losing their natural sense of direction because they are too reliant on satnav systems. She claims that drivers who keep one eye on the satnav screen rather than looking for familiar signs and reminders are losing their innate ‘caveman’ ability to work out where they are.

The satnav has been described as the Casanova of devices - flashy and good for some things, but not to be relied upon.

What do you use to navigate when driving- road maps or satnav?
