According to a recent survey more than 50% of Britons believe Mount Everest is actually in the UK, not in the Himalayas.
The survey, carried out by research service OnePoll for tour operator Journeys of Distinction, have discovered this shocking truth about our lack of geographical awareness.

20% surveyed did not know what countries made up the United Kingdom while 25% said that Ayers Rock, one of Australia’s most famous landmarks, is in the UK.

Speaking to the The Daily Mail, Karen Gee, managing director of Journeys of Distinction, said “We were astounded that while Britons clearly have an enviable and broad general knowledge of famous cities abroad - New York, Paris, Rome and many others - they seem to display a lack of geographical awareness when it comes to their own nation.

“It’s such a shame, because the UK has so many national treasures for people to experience, right here on their doorstep.”

Just to prove this survey does not represent Maps International fans we thought we would conduct a fun poll. To participate in the poll please visit our Maps International Facebook page.

Graphic artist Yanko Tsvetkov has created a set of satirical maps of national stereotypes. These intriguing maps although displaying some quite politically incorrect views are meant by the artist to entertain rather than re-enforce stereotypes.

Tim Dowling of the Guardian makes the point that maps by their nature a can be out of date, untrustworthy or politically incorrect. (Not if you buy our most up to date world maps). Sorry, we couldn’t let Tim’s statement go undefended. Tim does have a point though when he talks about having an ‘ignorance map’. Such a map in this ever politically changing world will have a much longer shelf life with deep rooted beliefs existing whether they are right or wrong.

Tsvetkov maps began with only a handful and when there popularity grew he made more.

He made a map of “The World According To Americans”, with Kazakhstan renamed “Borat” and the Falklands marked “British Riviera”. His map of Berlusconi’s worldview is quite something and is a real send up of the ex Italian Premier.

We should also point out that Tsvetkov is a man not as bigoted as his maps. He says,”If there is a serious problem, I prefer to present it in a funny say. I think there is enough serious coverage, and loads of people who can analyse it way better than I can.”

You can view Tsvetkov’s maps here.

Window gazer or aisle dweller? If you’re the type of passenger who gazes out of their aircraft window down at the clouds trying to make out landscapes or landmarks- you will be itching to see a great new website which has revealed notable locations along flight paths and insights into the people who inhabit them.

The world really is a small place. Well this map of the world is!

Scientists in Zurich have created the world’s smallest 3D map - of the world which has now been officially recognised by the Guinness World Record organisation.

The map measures 22 by 11 micrometers. Or, to add some scale, 1,000 maps would fit on just one grain of salt. IBM researchers used a new micro-small (or nano) particle etching machine to create the 3D map. A nanoscale tip - 100,000 times smaller than a sharpened pencil ,was uses to carve out the world.

Before you say this as much use as a nano sized world map, the new technology used will open the door for nano-sized computer chips and circuitry, ultra-absorbent customized medicines, enhanced optics and much more.

For a Huge World Map that you can actually read go here.

We thought we would tell you about our wonderful magnetic maps. Supplied as a finish to all our maps the magnetic wall map is a unique map in itself.

We have a great range of maps of the world. All of our maps of the world are available to purchase online in our maps of the world online shop. The maps of the world range are based on our famous physical maps of the world & political maps of the world.

The advantages of having a magnetic map is the physical interaction you have with them. When combined with our skittle magnets the map becomes a great reference point by easily moving the markers to your chosen destination. The magnetic maps are the perfect map if you want to map out travel points, plan routes or pinpoint past destinations over time.

Magnetic maps are supplied gloss laminated, mounted on a metal backing and framed in a stylish brushed aluminium frame, with a 16mm edging. This option is our premium finish and is increasingly becoming more popular with our customers for use as an operational tool.

Ready to be hung on the wall of any office or branch, your map will be supplied with a hanging kit.

Please remember all our world wall maps can be supplied as magnetic maps. Simply chose magnetic finish on the product page.

See our magnetic world wall map range here.
